Tony Lewis - Republican Speaks: TAYLOR: How important is good leadership during times of crisis? LEWIS: Good leadership during times of crises is paramount to recovery from whatever we are facing as a country. It is the leadership of the elected official coupled with the determination of the constituents that will determine not only the rate of recovery (or further decline), but how significant the recovery (or downturn) is. TAYLOR: Do you consider yourself to be a leader? If so, in what way? LEWIS: I consider myself to be a leader in the area of law enforcement. Over the past 15 years I have been presented with many obstacles and hurdles in law enforcement and it is my job to find innovative ways to address these issues while keeping the rights of the citizens from being abridged. TAYLOR: Other than yourself, who is the most effective leader you know alive today? LEWIS: Locally, I think both County Judge Ed Emmit and Mayor Bill White are excellent examples of effective leaders. During hurricane Ike, they both proved themselves and showed the community that selfless leadership can accomplish much. The most effective leader alive today quite possibly is General Norman Schwartzkoff. He was able to both rally support as well as public opinion in a war effort that could have easily been very unpopular. TAYLOR: Why should Harris County-area voters choose you on Tuesday, November 4th? LEWIS: Harris County voters should choose me this election cycle because I represent a clear shift in law enforcement thinking. I believe in the proactive, "go get 'em" policing approach. High visibility and well trained officers is what I am looking to accomplish along with an integrated approach to homeland security. I will send my Deputies to national training events to prepare them for the possibility of weapons of mass destruction and other terrorist challenges we face. Our police forces must be ready to adapt and operate quickly and with little notice. |
Ken Jones (i) - Democrat Speaks: TAYLOR: How important is good leadership during times of crisis? CONSTABLE JONES: Good leadership is critical, not only to lead your department, but also the community you serve. TAYLOR: Do you consider yourself to be a leader? If so, in what way? CONSTABLE JONES: I believe my education, military experience as a U. S. Army officer, and my 38 years in law enforcement as a supervisor and administrator, with the last 8 years as elected Constable of Pct. 3 qualifies me for leadership. I am certified in all areas of law enforcement and just completed a 40-hour refresher course at Sam Houston State for Constables. I have led my department in 8 years through two hurricanes and a tropical storm, where we rescued hundreds of stranded people in our patrol boat and high water vehicle. TAYLOR: Other than yourself, who is the most effective leader you know alive today? CONSTABLE JONES: Without a doubt, it would be retired Army General & Sheriff of Imperial County, California, Oren R. Fox. Sheriff Fox had a strong sense of duty to God, family, country, and the citizens he served. It was a privilege to work and train under him. TAYLOR: Why should Harris County-area voters choose you on Tuesday, November 4th? CONSTABLE JONES: I was Captain of the Constable's Department for 19 years and the elected Constable for the last 8 years. My department has state of the art equipment. Deputies are required to attend twice the state required hours of training. Initiated mounted patrol, child ID fingerprint program, neighborhood crime watch program, contract deputy program, handicapped parking enforcement, senior citizen protection program, disaster response team, G.R.E.A.T. anti-gang program, community policing sub-station and other programs that additional space won't permit. |
