"All About Bipartisanship" - Comments

Michael Skelly - Democrat Speaks:

TAYLOR: How important is good leadership during times of crisis? SKELLY: Good leadership is critical in a time of crisis. In light of our energy crisis and financial crisis, it's important that we have people with a background in business and with a depth of energy expertise to lead us through these challenges.

TAYLOR: Do you consider yourself to be a leader? If so, in what way? SKELLY: I've been a leader in business and intend to be a leader in Congress. Leadership is about understanding what needs to be done to accomplish goals and it's about a willingness to put aside partisanship and ideology to solve problems. Given that I have a strong background in doing just that, I expect to be an effective leader in Congress.

TAYLOR: Other than yourself, who is the most effective leader you know alive today? SKELLY: Bill White has been an extraordinarily effective leader because he's been able to use his business expertise to run Houston like a business, but has also never made his job about partisanship. We need more people like Bill White in Congress.

TAYLOR: Why should Harris County-area voters choose you on Tuesday, November 4th? SKELLY: About 10 years ago I started a two-man wind energy business. A decade later, that wind power company is a multi-billion dollar operation and one of the largest in the country. By the end of the year, it will be able to meet the energy needs of nearly a million American homes. We created thousands of good paying jobs in Texas and around the country and we worked with dozens of states to boost the supply of domestically produced clean energy.

My background is exactly what we need in Washington right now, and there are a few reasons why.

First of all, with the energy challenges we face, it's critical that we have Members of Congress with a depth of expertise in energy. I strongly believe we have to do it all - more oil and more renewables. That means drilling offshore and in new areas for oil and natural gas - and it also means investing in proven renewable technologies, like solar and wind. We have to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. It's critical for our economy and national security and we need folks in Congress who will work hard to get it done.

My business background is critical in these times of economic uncertainty. We need Members of Congress who know business from the inside out to fix the financial mess we're in. I'm a businessman, not a career politician. I spent my career as an entrepreneur and as a leader of a major company. I understand the economy and I understand what needs to be done to get us back on track.

We face a pretty extraordinary time. Given the seriousness of the challenges our country faces, including a financial meltdown and an energy crisis, it is critical that we send people to Washington with the background and competence to confront these important issues. This is a time for common-sense solutions and folks who can roll up their sleeves and get the job done.

Drew Parks - Libertarian Speaks:

TAYLOR: How important is good leadership during times of crisis? PARKS: Good leadership is essential in time of crisis, but more important is where the leader is leading. There are plenty of good leaders who lead entire nations into tyranny. So "change" isn't necessarily a good thing if the leader leads us astray. Both the Republican and Democrat parties' solution for our economic crisis is more socialism. This is the wrong direction for a free market - this change is bad.

TAYLOR: Do you consider yourself to be a leader? If so, in what way? PARKS: I consider a good leader one who could establish, from sound principles, a course of action through an internal compass. I would use our Constitution as a sound basis and one prescribed by oath, but rarely followed by Republicans and Democrats, as limited by Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution.

TAYLOR: Other than yourself, who is the most effective leader you know alive today? PARKS: On the basis of the principles above, Ron Paul stands alone as a lonely voice of reason in our government, which has gone astray.

TAYLOR: Why should Harris County-area voters choose you on Tuesday, November 4th? PARKS: We believe in a non-intrusive form of government, which looks like the one our founding fathers envisioned. A pyramid with a small Federal government at the top with limited authority, a larger State government which is closer to regional problems, and a larger local County government which can readily deal with real problems without wasting money in bureaucratic mismanagement at many levels. If you think the government is headed in the wrong direction, and the Republicans and Democrats solution is either wrong or they don't do what they say, vote Libertarian in general, and vote for me in particular.
