Kevin Brady (i) - Republican Speaks: TAYLOR: How important is good leadership during times of crisis? CONGRESSMAN BRADY: It's critical. In a terrible storm you don't want to risk turning the helm of the ship over to someone who has never piloted one. These days voters want common-sense, qualified leaders with proven expertise to help steer this nation through rough economic times. TAYLOR: Do you consider yourself to be a leader? If so, in what way? CONGRESSMAN BRADY: The question might be asked "do others consider you a leader?" I've been fortunate. Through my business leadership as a chamber of commerce executive for 18 years, as a member of the Texas Legislature and through my leadership role as Deputy Whip for the GOP and a member of the influential House Ways & Means Committee, I've had the opportunity to lead at the local, state and national levels. I also directed the Texas recovery efforts for Hurricane Rita and now Ike. I've learned a lot over the years from working with excellent leaders at all levels - that experience has helped tremendously while forging solutions to difficult challenges. TAYLOR: Other than yourself, who is the most effective leader you know alive today? CONGRESSMAN BRADY: In Texas there are so many community and businessmen and women who I've worked with over the years in the chamber of commerce. In Washington I am always impressed with U.S. Congresswoman Kay Granger of Fort Worth. A former teacher, successful businesswoman, mayor of a major city and now on the GOP leadership team in the U.S. House, she has the vision, determination, smarts and work ethic that leaders need these days. TAYLOR: Why should Harris County-area voters choose you on Tuesday, November 4th? CONGRESSMAN BRADY: It's not enough to simply change Washington, I'd like to take it back for middle-class Americans. It's clear we can't strengthen the economy by raising taxes, nationalizing our health care or continuing to be so dangerously dependent upon foreign oil. I have the experience, the clout and the principles to help get this country back on the right track. And because I never moved to Washington - I live here in Montgomery County with my wife and two young sons and commute to Washington to work each week - I've stayed very close to the neighborhoods and communities I represent in Congress. It's time to find real long-term solutions to the challenges facing America, like energy, health care, Social Security, Medicare and the growing national debt. I am eager and anxious to get back to work on behalf of the citizens of the 8th District of Texas. |
