Pete Olson - Republican Speaks: TAYLOR: How important is good leadership during times of crisis? OLSON: Leadership and character are the two most important qualities for elected officials to possess in a crisis. These two qualities determine if someone will rise to the occasion, create a sense of teamwork and urgency and move the process along toward an appropriate solution. In Congress, we need more people who will be steadfast, keep their word and their principles and work toward the best result for the American people, and not for a given party. TAYLOR: Do you consider yourself to be a leader? If so, in what way? OLSON: Throughout my career - in the Navy, at the Pentagon and on Senate staffs - I have worked with others to move ahead. As an aviator, I was responsible for the lives of my crew. At the Pentagon, with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, our decisions impacted the lives of thousands of troops around the world. Working in the Senate, I understood that I worked for the people of Texas - and that their concerns were primary. As Chief of Staff, I was responsible for mentoring and leading people and coordinating with other offices to achieve our goals. In this time, I made sure that we were able to inspire people to perform to the best of their abilities for the greater good. TAYLOR: Other than yourself, who is the most effective leader you know alive today? OLSON: My Father. My Dad grew up in a Chicago working class family and attended college in Illinois on an academic scholarship. After graduating, he served 3 years in the U.S. Army - I was born while my Dad was on active duty. After his discharge, he continued his education, eventually receiving a PhD from the Institute of Paper Chemistry. He then went to work with Champion Paper Company in 1967, where he worked for 33 years, eventually becoming the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer. My father accomplished all of that while being the Dad who coached my sports teams, came to nearly every game I played in through high school (I can count on one hand the number of games he missed for the 19 years I played organized sports). My Dad put family first in word and deed and was a successful businessman at the same time. To me, that's true leadership - choosing your priorities and then sticking to them for your entire life. TAYLOR: Why should Harris County-area voters choose you on Tuesday, November 4th? OLSON: Voters of the 22nd district deserve a Representative who will tell them where he stands and will act in Washington according to his words in the district. They also deserve a Representative like me, who will go beyond his good relations within the Texas delegation to reach out to all members of Congress on issues of national priority - like national security, NASA funding, illegal immigration, fiscal conservatism, governmental accountability and making America energy independent. I will be a Congressman who constituents and colleagues will know where I stand and will fight for those core Conservative values. |
John Wieder - Libertarian Speaks: TAYLOR: How important is good leadership during times of crisis? WIEDER: When the chips are up or down, you need to be a good leader. When they're down a leader needs to confidence and when the chips are up motivation should be instilled. When there is extreme pressure a leader needs to make the right choices. TAYLOR: Do you consider yourself to be a leader? If so, in what way? WIEDER: I have been a leader all of my life. A congressperson is an ambassador to the world. I have had leadership experience as the owner of two century 21's, 7 multi-line insurance offices, . With and inventor of 35 plus investment properties at one time that including international holding. After serving our country for 4 years with the USAF and 2 vietnam tours, I graduated from UH and COM and was Systems Analyst and Data Base Administrator for UTMB. I lead by example, instruction, delegation, problem solving and learning. (other languages) TAYLOR: Other than yourself, who is the most effective leader you know alive today? WIEDER: Asking who is the most effective leader alive today is tough question. Many lead abut are not effective enough. Our country is in the muddle of conundrums, with leaders that identify the problem, but have no idea on how to solve the problem. Because government is so big and there are many lawyers in the system, simple solutions get overlooked in favor of another plan that turns out to be an albatross around our (nickels)necks. I want to say Mc Cain, Baldwin, Palin, 'Barr and many others.. The most effective one I know is named GOD, JESUS, etc. He has risen and he is alive. TAYLOR: Why should Harris County-area voters choose you on Tuesday, November 4th? WIEDER: I am asking for your vote, not your money, I want to represent You, Us, U.S. too!!! I have done busines with other countries and learned their language to facilitate my dreams. After 25 years of being self employed I am ready to serve our country again I am going to rescue unborn Americans, GOOOH get our of our house. Go by our Constitution and provide simple solutions for problems that are good for all Americans. Our campaign has generated over 4 million Internet ads, 200K emails, , 1000 radio spots, 150+ TV ads, 14,K Telephone calls, 1500 signs, 27 surveys, 777 responses to individuals.
