"All About Bipartisanship" - Comments

Mike Jackson (i) - Republican Speaks:

TAYLOR: How important is good leadership during times of crisis? SENATOR JACKSON: Good leadership is crucial in times of crisis. We saw how smoothly the Hurricane Ike evacuation was handled by our local emergency management officials and we were therefore able to avoid massive amounts of loss of life because of it. As a leader you sometimes have to know when to get in front of a camera and when that isn't necessary. For the most part, my work during the Hurricane focused on providing some of our local jurisdictions the state resources they needed during the aftermath because our local authorities did such a fabulous job.

TAYLOR: Do you consider yourself to be a leader? If so, in what way? SENATOR JACKSON: As a State Legislator for almost twenty years, I think I have been an effective leader in the legislature on some very important issues like finally passing a comprehensive lawsuit reform legislation a couple of years ago. In the legislature, it also takes a leader to say no to your colleagues when it matters. That's why I voted against the new margins tax and helped kill a windstorm insurance bill in 2007. That bill was pushed by the insurance lobby and legislators in non coastal areas of the state who don't want to help supplement our insurance policies as we do theirs. It could have meant some serious rate increases to my constituents and the possibility that windstorm insurance policy owners would not receive a payment even though they have a legitimate claim. That bill was going to pass under my watch.

TAYLOR: Other than yourself, who is the most effective leader you know alive today? SENATOR JACKSON: No answer

TAYLOR: Why should Harris County area voters choose you on Tuesday, November 4? SENATOR JACKSON: For 20 years, I have been an effective conservative voice in the Texas Senate, fighting for lower taxes for small business and property owners. I am a small business owner myself and know how even slight tax increases can have a staggering effect on job creation in our economy. My priority during the next session is to continue to increase the small business tax exemption on the margins tax, continue to work to reduce the size of government, lower the appraisal cap on property appraisal increase and protect my constituents from insurance rate increases post Hurricane Ike.

Joe Jaworski - Democrat Speaks:

TAYLOR: How important is good leadership during times of crisis? JAWORSKI: Leadership is critical during these uncertain times because the solutions to the challenges we face require broad public support to be effective. In fact, I would argue that what we have today isn't a crisis in the economy or in health care system or in the insurance system - what we have today is a crisis of leadership.

TAYLOR: Do you consider yourself to be a leader? If so, in what way? JAWORSKI: I grew up in a family known for its public service and leadership skills, and I worked hard to hone that experience as Galveston Mayor Pro-Tem, holding the line on excessive new taxes and helping to lead our region's preparations for Hurricane Rita three years ago. During my campaign for Texas Senate, the yearning for strong leadership and positive change have been the most often-cited reasons voters are supporting my campaign.

TAYLOR: Other than yourself, who is the most effective leader you know alive today? JAWORSKI: In my experience it is Jim Yarbrough - Galveston County Judge. He knows how to use the power of his office and his personal skills to get both sides together and move the ball forward. I have appreciated his style since I was on the Galveston City Council, and I witnessed his diligent salesmanship to the voters of a massive Bond package that built the new County Justice Center. He also was a UT Longhorn offensive tackle in the 70's who blocked for Earl Campbell, and that gets him pretty close to hero status in my books.

TAYLOR: Why should Harris County-area voters choose you on Tuesday, November 4th? JAWORSKI: It's time for an independent voice and a new direction for the families and small businesses of Senate District 11. That need was made even clearer after Hurricane Ike roared through our communities. Now, residents whose lives and properties were devastated are struggling with big insurance companies that refuse to pay their legitimate claims, and the state's windstorm insurance fund is stretched to its limits. I will lead the insurance reform effort in Austin.

Cliff Messina - Libertarian Speaks:

TAYLOR: How important is good leadership during times of crisis? MESSINA: Good leadership is the difference between success and failure.

TAYLOR: Do you consider yourself to be a leader? If so, in what way? MESSINA: Yes I do. I've run a business for more than twenty years. I've employed and directed people, and have had to make split second decisions that can cost me and my employees greatly if I make the wrong decision. Trust me, I know this the hard way.

TAYLOR: Other than yourself, who is the most effective leader you know alive today? Dr. Ron Paul.

TAYLOR: Why should Harris County-area voters choose you on Tuesday, November 4th? MESSINA: I want to get government out of the lives of individuals, and businesses as much as possible. I believe that government is at the root of most of our problems, and is responsible for the economic downturn we face today. It's very alarming to me that the same people who caused this problem, or going to be the ones to solve this problem. The privet sector with few regulations, and low taxes will be the answer to this and most problems caused by the government. More government is a recipe for disaster.
