Kevin M. Murphy - Democrat Speaks: TAYLOR: How important is good leadership during times of crisis? MURPHY: As we saw in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, good leadership is essential. Whether it was organizing a group to help clear debrise, handing out supplies or assisting with communication in tough times, good leaders showed their mettle. I was honored to work with so many groups that saw a problem and got to work. TAYLOR: Do you consider yourself to be a leader? If so, in what way? MURPHY: I do. However, my understanding of leadership is based on a servant-leadership model. The original servant leader was Jesus Christ. I am daily reminded of I am running for this position not to have power for its own sake but for the opportunity to serve others. TAYLOR: Other than yourself, who is the most effective leader you know alive today? MURPHY: It is hard to name just one leader as most effective. I am inspired by the leadership at my small presibyterian church who, despite having less than 40 members, leads us year after year to provide Christmas baskets with two weeks of food for over 70 families in need. I am always amazed at how so much can be done by so few with the right leadership. TAYLOR: Why should Harris County-area voters choose you on Tuesday, November 4th? MURPHY: I started this race because I was mad about the failures of Austin that were dragging this state down. I will never forget who sent me to Austin and the work I have been sent to do. I have experience as a public school teacher and a college instructor. I went to law school because I wanted to change things I knew that I needed to understand the way laws were written and applied. As a practicing attorney, I have a broad range of experience with matters that affect Texans. I am committed to restoring responsible and responsive government to the people of Texas. |
