Taylor why Harris County voters should choose him in the Nov. 7, 2006, General Election HOWARD: "I am a practicing criminal defense attorney in Williamson County, Texas. It has been my observation that over the past number of years, our basic rights have been chipped away at relentlessly. Police misconduct is routinely ignored by the courts, to the point that increasingly heavy-handed tactics are being employed for minor infractions of the law. Every county is busy spending money building bigger courthouses and bigger jails in order to house more and more inmates who are charged neither with violent nor dishonesty crimes, but with minor substance-possession crimes. Police searches of houses and automobiles are on the increase, as judges are reluctant to rein in officers who violate the law. I intend to follow the Constitution to rein in the excesses of government. The Declaration of Independence states: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men..." What the Declaration states philosophically, and what the Constitution states legally, is that our Creator gave us rights and that we institute governments to secure these rights. The government does not grant us rights, they are ours from birth. The government's job is to secure them. If elected, I will work to secure to all Texans those rights which were endowed to them by their Creator." |
