State Representative Martha Wong (Re-Election Texas State House District 134) Talks to Houston Business Connections: Tells Publisher Aubrey R. Taylor why Harris County voters should choose her in the Nov. 7, 2006, General Election

WONG: "I am a native Houstonian. I have resided in beautiful HD 134 for over 40 years. I represented district C as a Houston City Councilmember for six years which gave me a passion for serving my neighbors in Houston. I ran successfully to represent HD 134 in 2002, and have been proud to work for Houston ever since.

During my tenure as State Representative, I have fought for and succeeded in lowering property taxes. I don't have to tell you how important this issue is to HD 134, so it has been my goal to work hard for this cause.

Also, being an educator myself, I continue to work to provide a quality educational system for our children. I have been successful in obtaining salary increases for teachers as well as fiscal accountability for school districts.

Additionally, having a world class medical center in the district, I fight for accessible health care, including the CHIP program. I am also advocating for federally funded medical clinics to be more prominent in our city, so we can alleviate the burden on our state and local resources.

I have been honored in Austin by being named Vice Chair of two house committees, which is almost unheard of for a sophomore level representative. Although my colleagues have blessed me with these appointments, I am more pleased simply to be representing the individuals in district 134. Many of the residents of HD 134 take the time to call and voice their praise for my efforts, as well as concerns they have regarding the district. This continuous contact allows me to better represent my constituents and their needs. I look forward to going back to Austin so I can keep working hard to represent our region and state."

Ellen Cohen (Candidate for House District 134) Talks to Houston Business Connections: Tells Publisher Aubrey R. Taylor why Harris County voters should choose her in the Nov. 7, 2006, General Election

COHEN: "I have lived in District 134 since 1977. For the past 15 years, I've been President and CEO of the Houston Area Women's Center, which is dedicated to eliminating domestic and sexual violence. In that capacity I lead a $5.5 million dollar, 120 person staff serving over six thousand women, children and men.

I agreed to run for the legislature because like you I am fed up with partisan politics in Austin. We know that Houston, under the leadership of Mayor Bill White, demonstrated to the world that good people, smart people, caring people can put aside partisan politics and do what needs to be done. As your representative I will take that same attitude to Austin, work towards consensus while always maintaining my moral compass. I will bring common sense and reasoned discourse back to the Texas Legislature because as has been said 'you cannot shake hands with a clenched fist.' I am willing, and with your support, we can make it happen we can have leadership for a change.

I am a candidate for the Democratic nomination for State Representative District 134, which includes Bellaire, West University, River Oaks and parts of Meyerland and Montrose. I have pledged to work diligently to restore balance and integrity to the Texas Legislature. My priorities will be improving public education, restoring children's health insurance, finding solutions to the growing cost of college tuition and lowering homeowners' insurance rate."
